{"id":1212,"date":"2013-01-06T16:19:19","date_gmt":"2013-01-06T14:19:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rifai.org\/sufism\/?page_id=1212"},"modified":"2013-01-06T16:19:19","modified_gmt":"2013-01-06T14:19:19","slug":"i-climbed-to-the-branches-of-a-plum-tree","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.rifai.org\/sufism\/english\/hazrats\/hazrat-yunus-emre\/i-climbed-to-the-branches-of-a-plum-tree\/","title":{"rendered":"I climbed to the branches of a plum tree"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I climbed to the branches of a plum tree,<br \/>\nAnd I helped myself to the grapes up there.<br \/>\nThe owner of the orchard scolded me:<br \/>\n&#8220;What are you devouring my walnuts for?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He made me into a thief&#8211;that was wrong:<br \/>\nSo, in turn, I hurled slanders at him too&#8211;<br \/>\nAnd the peddler asked when he came along:<br \/>\n&#8220;You were to marry my daughter, weren&#8217;t you?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I dumped sun-baked mud into the cauldron<br \/>\nAnd boiled it together with the North Wind.<br \/>\n&#8220;What on earth could this thing be?&#8221; asked someone;<br \/>\nDipping the grapes I put them in his hand.<\/p>\n<p>To the weaver at the loom, I gave thread<br \/>\nWhich he chose not to wind into a ball;<br \/>\nTo get the fabric orders out, he sped&#8211;<br \/>\nThose who want can now come and get it all.<\/p>\n<p>I snatched one of the wings of a sparrow<br \/>\nAnd loaded it on to forty ox-carts.<br \/>\nEven forty spans failed to pull it, though;<br \/>\nSo the sparrow&#8217;s wing got stuck in these parts.<\/p>\n<p>A fly caught an eagle, lifted it high&#8211;<br \/>\nAnd smack onto the ground, a thumping thrust.<br \/>\nWhat I tell you is the truth, not a lie:<br \/>\nWith my own eyes I saw the rising dust.<\/p>\n<p>I had a wrestling match with a cripple&#8211;<br \/>\nWith no hands, he grappled me by my legs;<br \/>\nI struggled, but couldn&#8217;t make a ripple.<br \/>\nHe burnt me inside out, down to my dregs.<\/p>\n<p>From the mythic mountain that girds the world<br \/>\nDown came on the road a rock aimed at me;<br \/>\nI was nearly struck by the stone they hurled;<br \/>\nIt might have turned my face topsy-turvy.<\/p>\n<p>The fish, it turns out, climbed the poplar tree<br \/>\nTo gobble the pickles of tar up there.<br \/>\nThe stork gave birth to a baby donkey;<br \/>\nYou better get the meaning, don&#8217;t just stare.<\/p>\n<p>To the blind, I gave signals with my hand;<br \/>\nWhatever I whispered, the deaf man heard.<br \/>\nThe dumb broke into speech, called me out and<br \/>\nRepeated with me every single word.<\/p>\n<p>I held an ox tight, with all my power,<br \/>\nI strangled it, threw it on the ground, loose;<br \/>\nThen the owner of the ox rushed over,<br \/>\nSaying, &#8220;That neck you just broke, that&#8217;s my goose!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I got stuck again, couldn&#8217;t get away;<br \/>\nJust didn&#8217;t know what to do&#8211;how could I?<br \/>\nThen another peddler popped up to say,<br \/>\n&#8220;Why is it that you have plucked out my eye?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I came upon a turtle on the way&#8211;<br \/>\nI had an eyeless serpent for comrade.<br \/>\n&#8220;I&#8217;ll ask you where you&#8217;re heading, if I may?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;We hope to reach Caesarea,&#8221; they said.<\/p>\n<p>These are the words that Yunus had to say,<br \/>\nHis resembles no other utterance;<br \/>\nTo keep it out of the hypocrites&#8217; way<br \/>\nHe has put the veil on the face of sense.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I climbed to the branches of a plum tree, And I helped myself to the grapes up there.
